# How to offer a free gift with purchase above a cart amount on Shopify

> Pick a product from your catalogue as the gift. Once the tier is reached, Yaco Progress Bar adds it to the cart and a Shopify automatic discount makes it free.

## Create a free gift tier

A free gift tier is a tier of type **Free product**, set up in four steps.

1. Open **Goals & Discounts**, tab **Goals**, then click **Add a goal** and choose **Free product**.
2. In the tier sentence, set the threshold: a cart amount, a weight or a number of items, depending on the [bar](https://www.yaco.studio/docs/bars) the tier belongs to.
3. Keep **Goal + automatic discount**: the app creates the Shopify discount that makes the gift free. With **Goal only**, the bar still shows the tier, but you create the matching Buy X get Y automatic discount yourself in Shopify Discounts.
4. Click **Save**.

## Choose the gift products

Select the products to offer under **Discounted products**: up to 20 different products, with no limit on variants. With several products or variants, **Selectable free product quantity** sets how many gifts the shopper can pick.

**At a discounted value** sets what the shopper pays for the gift:

- **Free**: the gift costs nothing.
- **Percentage**: a percentage off the product.
- **Amount off each**: a fixed amount off each unit.
- **Final amount each**: the price paid for each unit.

**Set a specific discount per product** gives each selected product its own value. The admin warns you when a gift can’t be offered: product in Draft, variant out of stock, or product not available on the online store.

## Choose how the gift gets into the cart

The **Auto add gift to cart** card offers four modes.

| Mode | What the shopper sees |
|---|---|
| **Auto add gift to cart** / **Auto show Gift modal** (default) | A single-variant gift is added automatically. With several products or variants, the gift chooser opens on its own. |
| **Show "Choose a gift" button** | A button under the bar opens the gift chooser. Offered only when there is more than one gift variant. |
| **Show gift list in the progress bar** | The gifts are listed inside the bar and added in one click. Image and name link to the product page. The list appears once the tier is reached. |
| **Disable auto add to cart** / **Disable modal & button** | Compatibility mode: the app adds nothing, because another app adds the gift. |

### Sell the product until the tier is reached

In gift list mode, **Offer the products before the goal is reached, as a paid option** shows the list from the first item in the cart. Below the threshold, ticking a product adds it at full price; it becomes free (or discounted) once the tier is reached, and paid again if the cart drops back. Typical use: paid gift wrapping, free above a set amount. This product never counts towards its own tier’s threshold.

### One gift per multiple reached

**Proportional free product quantity** makes the number of gifts follow how many times the cart reaches the tier. Example: tier at 1 item from a collection, 2 items added, 2 free products.

## Keep or remove the gift

The gift leaves the cart when the cart drops below the threshold. Two options change what happens above it:

- **Then remove the gift from the cart** removes the gift once a second threshold is passed. Choose **the next goal is reached** (default: follows the next tier on the same bar; with no tier above, the rule does nothing) or **an amount is reached** (a fixed amount above the tier’s threshold).
- **Force to keep the gift in cart** stops the shopper from removing the gift: no “no thanks” button on the storefront, no box to untick and no Remove link at checkout.

## Free gift and discount codes

A gift and a discount code only coexist if each one allows the other. The gift is a product discount: in Shopify Discounts, the code must allow combining with product discounts, and the tier must allow the code’s class (icons next to **Goal + automatic discount**).

When a code that doesn’t combine is applied, the gift is removed with a message telling the shopper why, even with **Force to keep the gift in cart**. Removing the code puts the same gift back automatically.
