# Why isn't the free gift added to the cart?

> Check that the gift variant is active and in stock, then how the tier adds it: automatically, with a button, from a list, or not at all.

## The gift product or variant is unavailable

The app only offers a gift it can deliver. Check in Shopify that:

- the gift product is active and available on the Online Store sales channel;
- the chosen variant is in stock. Stock is checked per variant, not per product: a gift marked "Sold out" usually means that variant is out of stock.

While shoppers browse, the app refreshes gift availability. A gift that runs out shows as Sold out and can no longer be picked, and a tier that promises two gifts offers only one when a single unit is left.

To read stock, the app needs the "read product inventory" permission. If Shopify asks you to approve updated permissions when you open the app, accept them, otherwise stock is not taken into account.

## The tier does not add the gift on its own

In the tier card, the **Auto add gift to cart** section decides how the gift reaches the cart.

| Option | What the shopper sees |
|---|---|
| **Auto add gift to cart** | A single-variant gift is added automatically. With several products or variants, the gift chooser opens instead. |
| **Show "Choose a gift" button** | A button under the bar opens the chooser. Nothing is added until the shopper picks. |
| **Show gift list in the progress bar** | Gifts are listed inside the bar and added in one click. |
| **Disable modal & button** | The app adds nothing. Use it only when another app adds the gift. |

With the button or the list, a gift missing from the cart simply means the shopper has not picked one yet. See [gift chooser](https://www.yaco.studio/docs/gift-chooser).

## The shopper closed the chooser or removed the gift

- "No thanks", the Esc key or a click outside the chooser closes it for the current session. It does not reopen by itself until a new tier is reached. The "Choose a gift" button stays available, and a new tab shows the chooser again.
- Removing the gift from the cart counts as a refusal: the app does not add it back to that cart. If the gift must stay, tick **Force to keep the gift in cart** in the tier card.

## The shopper is not eligible for the tier

The gift follows the tier's targeting:

- a tier limited to customer segments never gives the gift to guests, since a visitor who is not logged in belongs to no segment;
- a scheduled tier is not offered before its start date, even if its Shopify discount already shows as active;
- a tier can be switched off in one market with **Disable goal for this market**, or limited to some countries.

See [targeting](https://www.yaco.studio/docs/targeting).

## A discount code is applied

When the shopper's code does not combine with the gift, the gift is taken out of the cart with a message, then put back when the code is removed. See [gift removed from the cart](https://www.yaco.studio/docs/gift-removed).

## The gift is added but not free

If the gift line is in the cart at full price, the tier discount did not apply. The usual causes: the tier is set to **Goal only** without a discount of your own, another automatic discount does not combine with it, or the shopper is a guest on a segment-restricted tier. See [discount not applied](https://www.yaco.studio/docs/discount-not-applied).
