How to show a tier only to some customers (VIP, B2B, campaign, dates)
Limit a tier by customer tags, segments, B2B or B2C, login state, traffic source, cart contents, country or dates. The automatic discount follows most of these rules.
Where the targeting settings are
Targeting is set per tier, in the tier card: Goals & Discounts, tab Goals. The cards are Customer eligibility, Traffic source, Cart state, Country selection and the active dates. Click Save to apply.
A tier hidden by its targeting isn’t discounted at checkout either, except for the cart content conditions described below.
Customer eligibility
- Customer type: B2B only, B2C only or Both. B2B customers are identified by their Shopify company profile. Shopify only allows this filter on Shopify Plus stores; elsewhere, use tags or segments.
- Login state: Connected only or Guest only.
- Customer tags: Customer with specific tags (at least one of them) or Customer without specific tags. Separate tags with commas. A guest has no tags.
- Customer segments: Customer in specific segments. This needs Allow access to customer data.
- Apply on POS: also applies the discounts on Shopify Point of Sale. This setting is shared by all tiers.
A segment only applies to logged-in customers. Guests and customers outside the segment never get the tier’s discount or gift, and no error is shown. To keep a tier away from B2B customers, use B2C only rather than a segment, which would also exclude guests.
Traffic source: tiers for a campaign
Choose All visitors, or Depending on the UTM parameters of the visitor's landing URL. Then add rows of parameter, operator and value; all rows must match.
- Parameters: campaign, source, medium, content, term (
utm_campaign,utm_source,utm_medium,utm_content,utm_term). - Operators: is, is not, contains, does not contain, is present, is missing. Case and spaces are ignored.
- A missing parameter matches the negative operators: a direct visitor “is not” any campaign. This hides a public offer from campaign visitors.
Campaign link to share builds the link from your “is” rows, with Test in the store. Paste that exact link into your email or ad tool: a typo there is the first reason a campaign tier doesn’t show.
The source is saved on the cart for the whole visit, up to the order, where it appears in the order’s additional details in Shopify. The latest campaign link wins. It lasts as long as the Shopify cart. A shopper who lands directly on checkout from a campaign link has no source.
Cart state conditions
Cart state shows or hides the tier depending on the cart: Cart attribute, Product in collection, Specific product(s), Purchase type in cart or Cart amount reached, combined with AND or OR.
Only Cart attribute conditions are also checked by the discount at checkout. The others only change what the bar shows. An attribute set by your theme during the visit (a gift wrap box ticked in the cart drawer) reaches checkout after the next page load.
Countries
Country selection offers All countries or Specific countries, based on where the visitor is physically located. It appears when your store sells in several countries. To test, use a VPN and a private window.
For a different threshold per country, keep All countries and use market exceptions instead.
Active dates
Set a start and an end date for a seasonal tier. Outside these dates, the tier is offered neither on the storefront nor at checkout.
The Shopify discount of a scheduled gift tier shows as Active in Shopify Discounts before the start date. That is expected: the gift is still not offered before the date. Percentage and amount-off tiers show as Scheduled.
Check in the preview
The preview can simulate tags, segments, country, traffic source, cart attributes and purchase type, so you can see the bar as each customer will. Discount missing for a targeted customer? See discount not applied.
